Professional Aquatic Loam (Potting Soil) — SKU 042126
The Gold Standard for Lotus & Water Lilies
Stop the "floating soil" mess in your pond! Our loam-based aquatic soil is designed to stay put at the bottom of the pot. Sourced from the experts at Walker Nursery, this nutrient-dense mix provides the ideal foundation for heavy feeders like Lotus and Water Lilies.
Unlike standard potting soil, this specialized loam mix stays submerged, ensuring your pond water remains clear while your wetland plants flourish with vibrant blooms.
Elevate Your Pond with Professional-Grade Quality
Walker Nursery is a "to-the-trade" wholesale nursery, typically supplying only professional landscape architects and high-end garden centers. By using this Professional Aquatic Loam, you are bringing that same expert-level quality to your own backyard.
The Result: You get a cleaner pond, healthier root systems, and the kind of vibrant, massive blooms that only professional-grade soil can provide.
Product Highlights
Formulated for Success: A professional blend of sandy loam, volcanic rock, and worm castings—the "protein powder" of the plant world.
Crystal Clear Water: Heavy consistency anchors large tubers and prevents clouding.
Eco-Friendly: Sourced from sustainable practices and packaged in a breathable burlap bag.
Yield: One bag fills roughly three #1 nursery pots or one #2 water lily pot (approx. 1.5 gallons).
Pro-Tips for Successful Planting
Lotuses are the "heavy hitters" of the pond world—they are incredibly hungry! The worm castings in this soil provide the essential minerals and energy needed for those massive, iconic flowers.
Prepare the Soil (The Pre-Soak): If the soil is very dry (hydrophobic), water might bead off the surface. Pre-soaking is a must. Mix the soil in a bucket with a little pond water until it reaches the consistency of stiff cookie dough. This "activates" the mix and prevents it from floating or clouding the pond.
Pack it Firmly: When repotting, pack the loam tightly around the roots or tubers. Eliminating air pockets ensures the plant stays anchored.
The "Capping" Layer: Leave 1 to 2 inches of space at the top of your pot and fill it with pea gravel or small river stones. This acts as a weight and prevents curious Koi or Goldfish from digging into the rich soil.
Submerge Slowly: Lower your newly potted plant into the pond very slowly and at an angle. This allows air to escape gradually, so the soil isn't blown out by a large air bubble.
The "Wait" Method: If the soil is particularly dusty, fill your pot and let it sit in a shallow tub of water overnight to soak up moisture from the bottom before moving it into the main pond.
Note on Shelf Life: Aquatic loam and worm castings have a very long shelf life. While beneficial microbes may go dormant when dry, the stable minerals and nutrients never expire. Once you add water and that warm Hawaii sun hits the pot, your lotuses will take off!
Quick Guide: Pot Sizes
#1 Pot: Roughly 0.75 to 1 Gallon (Trade Gallon).
#2 Pot: Roughly 1.5 Gallons.
Recommendation: For the best blooms in our Hawaii sun, Lotuses usually prefer the extra room of a #2 or #3 pot!
